asked:

My boyfriend will graduate from airplane mechanic school in December. He currently works at an airport earning a good paycheck, but he wants to earn some extra cash in his spare time by starting a small little lawn care service.

He got his LLC, a traylor, a commercial mower, and other equiptment that may be needed to do yard cleanups and such.

He asked me to make up some flyers for him. One thing that I was going to add on the flyer was “Present this ad for 10% off your first service”

I think that he has more of a chance of getting called if people know they’re getting a deal.

My step-father has owned a lawn care business for 15+ years. He makes about 500,000 dollars yearly during just the spring,. summer and fall season (more in the winter when he plows). The problem is that my step father and I do NOT get along (at all!) so I cant really ask him for advice. (I’ve asked my mom though, she runs his business)..

I’m just looking for more suggestions.
I should add that both my boyfriend and I are 20 years old

Spring Lawn Care

asked:

I just bought my first home, the last owner obviously never took care of the lawn… The lawn is covered in sticker weeds and that annoying grass that never spread and just turned into clumps all over the place. I have tried pulling the weeds, and spraying weed killer over the course of the summer (once every week)
I finally just resorted to taking a flat shovel and started taking everything up in an attempt to start fresh, but this is proving to be very back breaking work. I wish I could just burn the lawn but the city I live in has implemented a burn ban…
Is there an easier way for me to get my lawn cleaned up over the winter so come spring I can lay out grass seed? and when I’m finally able to spread my seed (ha ha) how would I best approach it so as to avoid it just becoming that clumpy grass that is already infesting my lawn?

Spring Lawn Care

So many gardeners, when looking to get a lawnmower, immediately think that an electric or other power mower is the only choice. This is very far from being the truth. Especially in the case of those with a modest area of lawn to cope with, a push mower (for example the Qualcast Panther) must not be dismissed when looking around the garden centre.

Gardens are getting smaller – of that there is very little doubt. Land is getting even more high-priced, so it is no shock that the land available to every new house is being reduced. Along with this, there has been an increasing fashion in garden design towards hard landscaping, removing the lawn from the scheme completely.

This is all very well and good, but the awkward fact remains that for a lot of people, a lawn is an irreplaceable feature in a garden. It’s wonderful to have a soft place to lie and enjoy the sun, and without having a lawn – well many people feel that it’s not a proper garden.

But there are undeniable problems. Quite apart from the expense of getting a mower, you have to get a place to store it and you have to maintain it. The power cable of an electric mower gets in the way, If you have a petrol mower you continually seem to be running out of fuel, and for just a modest area of lawn it barely seems worth all the trouble.

But just think for a minute how a push mower gets over all this:-

They are generally a lot less expensive to buy

There’s no fuel or electricity to be concerned about

Storage is easy as they are light and usually dismantle

They are quiet – except for the fairly gentle sound that many people actually love to hear

Being cylinder mowers, you get a nice stripe on your lawn.

If you choose to invest in a quality push mower, such as the Qualcast Panther, you get all the advantages detailed above, at about half the cost of a good electric rotary model. The Panther is also available in 2 sizes – 30 cm and 38 cm – which means that there is a model that will cope with more than purely a postage-stamp lawn. So the advantages are not confined to the small-garden owner alone.

So it seems to me that there’s a clear message here. A power mower is not the only option if you have a modest garden, and don’t feel that you have to get rid of the grass either. A push mower such as the Panther could well solve many of your difficulties.

Seaweed is often used as a soil conditioner or fertiliser in the world of gardening. The range of benefits it brings are so great, though, that it’s a great addition to any plant growing activity. Seaweed contains a huge amount of minerals and trace elements and brings with it with numerous bio stimulants.

Seaweed can be used as a fertiliser or soil conditioner in many forms. It can be dug into your soil straight off the beach, or it can be dried and granulated or powdered. You can even extract the goodness from seaweed to form a concentrated fertlising liquid. In modern fertilizer use liquid seaweed makes a highly efficient base for the nutrition of a wide variety of plants as it can be safely mixed with most of the commonly used sources of nitrogen, phosphate and pottassium, along with supplements like iron.

The seaweed stimulates the soil bacteria which helps release much of the nutrient content which is in many cases fixed in the soil and not available to the plants, whether it is grass, tomatoes, vegetables or flowers, to make the most of any nutrients being applied, reducing the quantity required for healthy growth. The seaweed is also valuable in helping to break down organic matter, particularly in turf where thatch can be a serious problem if not managed properly.

Creating Your Own Seaweed Compost

The seaweed collected was used to build large heaps as pictured below, with a layer of seaweed around thirty cms thick, then a layer of our own dune sand around ten cms thick. These layers were repeated until the heap was around two metres high. Each heap was then turned over four times in the following year, then taken into the first of the three composting bays to dry out.

After a few weeks of drying the compost was then put through the Royer shredder, straight into the second bay and left for a further few weeks before the final step of screening into the third bay. At this stage it was ready for use as a nutritious compost for topdressing and for divotting. Fantastic material prepared from beach collection to usable form in just over a year.

Seaweed contains a wide range of nutrients and trace elements, along with alginates, which combine in such a unique manner that when seaweed is added to heavy clay soils it acts as a floculator, which means it breaks down the heavy soil into a friable crumb structure thus providing a vastly improved free draining growing medium. This, of course, does not happen overnight but is one of the greatest benefits of long term applications on these types of soils.

On the other side of the coin seaweed is an excellent addition to sandy soils, adding to the humous content and nutrient levels, and increasing drought resistance. Because of my experience I do believe in fact that adding seaweed to the rootzone mix in any USGA green construction does alleviate the many problems, such as take-all patch and nematode discolouration, that are inherent in a high sand content material because of the lack of a healthy microbial and bacterial population.

Raw seaweed should only be used in situations where it can be dug directly into the soil. For example it is fantastic with potatoes, giving a great flavour, and has the added advantage that the iodene content in the seaweed prevents diseases such as scab. The salt content is minimal and so it does not add a salty flavour to any vegetables.

Heidi B asked:

My BF and I just bought a beautiful house that I totally love. Problem is, it used to be occupied by three college guys who obviously didn’t take care of the lawn, (among other things!). The lawn desperately needs to be weeded since it looks like crabgrass and dandelions are thriving quite nicely. It also needs to be reseeded. What is the best and most cost effective way of doing this in time for Spring and Summer? THANKS!

Spring Lawn Care
