<a href="{Aurora Lindsay">Spring Lawn Care</a>

"Mom"
Here's what you do. Spray your lawn with Round-up or another brand just like it. to find out look at the labels where the ingredients are.
NOTE: Roundup lost it's patent a couple of years ago so now any chemical co. can make the stuff.
I use a product called "Kills-All" by Hy-Yeild. Same as round-up but 1/3 the price.
Once the round-up or kills-all hits the ground, it becomes neutralized (per the label & the Wisconsin Dept of Natural resources)( I live in WI.

Oh ya, make sure you have about 12 hours of no rain after you put on the killer. Than after the 12 hours, if you don't get any rain within 24 hours, lightly water the sprayed area. What that does is allows the plant to take the chemical down to it's roots. Do it, it works.

Ok in about a week, you're going to see you grass turn yellow (it's dying). Each following day it gets paler & paler. When it's gray, it's dead. Roots & all.

Ok now it's dead, what to do??
There are 2 ways to go, complete tear out of the dead grass than reseeding or sodding the area. EX$PEN$IVE.
OR the cheapest (but the same results as seeding) way is "Slit Seeding. or some people call it "Over Seeding"

Slit or Over Seeding is cheaper because you're not removing the dead grass.
What a slit seeder does is cut grooves about 3" apart in the dirt and drops the grass seed in those grooves. You slit seed in both directions.
Unfortunately you're going to have to hire someone to do that part of the job because a slit seeder is too heavy to handle (about 500 lbs.)

Slit seeding can be done at any time of the year (except Winter when the ground is frozen) I would suggest that you do it in the Fall before the ground freezes. The seed will lay dominant untill Spring.
If you live in an area that gets snow, that's even better. When the snow melts, it'll water the seed and you won't have to for awhile.
Once the ground tempeture hits 54 degrees At Night, the grass starts to germinate. Than you have to keep it wet for 30 days. Don't let the water puddle up or run off.
There are 2 types of grasses, warm weather & cool weather. Each one has different kinds of grass seeds in the blend.
I'm from the North, Wisconsin. So I know the cool weather grass/s. Ours has 3 different kinds of grass seed , bluegrass, fescue,& rye grass. Each of those have many many variaties of each.

What we use is a fine blade, drought tolerant diease resisdent blend of all 3.

oh ya, there's one thing I forgot to mention. You "CAN'T" put on a "pre-emergent Crab grass control for the 1 st. year.
Crabgrass control prevents seeds from germinating. All seeds. I don't know about coconuts though lol
A pre-emergent does Not kill the seed, it seals it so no moisture can get to it to germinate. Crabgrass control lasts about 12 weeks depending on how much water it gets. but generally 12 weeks is safe.

On my lawn, I put the crabgrass control on in the Spring (April) and in the Summer (mid July). I water my lawn alot.

if you kill your grass with a chemical you might harm the soil therefor you will have trouble growing grass in the future the best thing to do is hire someone to cut your grass in a certain way to reduce it to mud or dirt. then next spring you can regrow all your grass. hope i helped.

Trim some big branches of your trees so light can get through. Also, try talking to your neighbors and see if they will trim theirs are even let you trim them. That is what my husband and I did and it has worked well. Also, the other posters are right about some grasses doing better in shade than others.

<a href="{Aurora Lindsay">Spring Lawn Care</a>

Round up - Right now. Another application in 2 weeks and maybe a third in another week. One application will not get the new weed seeds that will come again. Speaking of which, crabgrass seeds can stay dormant for 3 to 4 years. Prevention is best. Apply granular pre emergent next spring and again in early summer.
Fescue should be planted in the fall. Just about all others are warm season grasses so spring is best for planting those varieties.
Always keep up your grass cutting during the crabgrass season - cut it BEFORE the crabgrass even gets to the seed stage.
Pre emerge and cutting schedule - it is a war you can win in about 2 seasons.

You may not be able to do it depending on the amount of shade. If there is some sun that gets through then there is a chance. There are several reasons grass doesn't do well under trees other than the lack of sun. One is the trees **** the nutrients, trace salts and minerals out of the soil. The other is that some trees make it very acidic underneath. Both of those problems can be treated with regular hardwood ash (from a fire place). It is full of the very stuff the trees **** from the soil and is very alkaline too. If you don't have access to ashes, lime and good fertilizer with trace metals will work. Also be sure the grass you are trying to grow is shade resistant.

<a href="{Aurora Lindsay">Spring Lawn Care</a>

At first I thought you wsnted no lawn meaning grass and salt would do that but nothing would grow.

No, you need weed and feed. You use a spreader to cast it. You could wait and do another before planting. However in the early spring you need a ore-emergent crabgrass killer down. To Dow your grass seed someone told me a trick. Put it in the freezer a day or two. Don't know why but it seems that the cold makes the grass think it was dormant and it comes out when planted rearing to go. I am not sure if it works with all grasses but did with KY Blue grass. That was in Ohio. So don't have to wait tip spring.

Scratch up ground a bit with a rake so the seed can get into the soul and water. Straw lightly strewn over it helps keep birds from eating it and it can get a start. The grass will push out weeds if it getsba good start. But can't just put it down and do no more as in spring need ore-emergents and need fertilizers for grass a bit later. If you want the easy way you can hire a company to spray 3 or 4 times a year and once grass gets a good start take it over yourself.

Good luck on a lush lawn.

I dont know why people are saying grass wont grow in shade.. I have a way shady yard and have grass.. I think the issue is water - are the trees drinking all the water? are the trees stopping the rain from hitting the ground...

Pine trees of course inhibit grass because they make the soil acidic and there is nothing you can really do for this except select plants accordingly that grow in acidic soils

so my answer is MORE WATER!!! also find some plants that like shade and plant some of those too...

after seeding, wait about 6 weeks before cutting and when you do cut, cut 1/3 rd height of what you would normally cut. Weeds - you can use Scott's Bonus S. When grass is dry, spread in a North-south direction, then east-west (vice verse). Water 30 minutes, wait 6 weeks and reapply. Will last 3 years in garage, just don't let it get damp. Bold spots is no grass growing, add more seed, water in for 2 weeks straight so seeds will sow. If bold spots is brown patch - this is insects- then use Ortho Insect Control(you can get at any home improvement)(red bag) granule. Once again-when dry follow same step as Scott's Bonus S, water, 6 weeks and reapply.
New weeds come out every 6 weeks and also takes 6 weeks for baby insects to come out, so reapply in 6 weeks for insect control.
Once weeds are removed and you want to keep grass green and healthy use Milorganite. Milorganite is 100% nitrogen. Keeps grass green, healthy. You will have a beautiful lawn. Everyone will envy you and enjoy!
I recommend watering 3 times a week for 45 minutes at a time. In 90 degree or more, you might have to water 4 times a week. You will give lawn a good drenching so water will get to the roots just in case you forget to water. Unless Mother Nature waters, then wait a few days before watering again.

Round up will definitely kill the grass. It really would be easier to rent a tiller and rip up the weeds that way.

I have used both for my backyard when I first moved in my home.
