The ZTR sports a Hydro Gear hydraulic piston pump for ground drive. John Deere chose a piston type motor for its efficiency advantage over the related gear type motors. The piston pump provides oil flow through a common reservoir to a single, piston type wheel motor.

The ZTR uses steel hydraulic lines to supply a radiant cooling method for the hydraulic oil. This eliminated the need to use an oil cooler.

An operator can choose an infinitely variable speed of 0 to 8.2 mph going forward and 0 to 6 mph in reverse. The lever controls are on either side of the operator’s seat and in front. They provide complete control of moving forward, reverse, and turning on a dime.
